Wino Wednesdays: WELCOME!

Hey Y’all! Welcome to Wino Wednesdays… This section of my blog will be about all things FOOD, WINE, and living the Gluten Free lifestyle while enjoying plenty of good eats and drinks.

This week meals were a bit all over the spectrum. Largely because I had more mouths to feed. We made it through the weekend with minimal contamination and loads of good eats. Here’s how I stayed true to my GF life, with only a few strayed moments.

Homecooked Eats: The easiest way to stick to my diet is to… COOK FOR MYSELF. Yeah. It’s time consuming, exhausting and creates a LOT of dishes. But my body and soul definitely benefit from it.

This weeks menu:

  1. Chicken Parmesan – delicious. Difficult to make… and messy. I used oat flour, eggs, and Italian “breadcrumbs” for my batter. It was great… but the breaded mixture didn’t stay stuck to my chicken. Part of that may be due to the fact that I started with frozen chicken. Next time I’ll thaw the chicken first, then try.
  2. Beef Stroganoff – good. Easy to make… not entirely Dairy free. I opted to make things easier and bought the pouch of seasoning… Something I don’t do when I’m just cooking for myself. But Dad isn’t GF or DF so I substituted my norms for compromise. I used almond milk and skipped the sour cream. So it definitely wasn’t probably what he was expecting.
  3. German Chocolate Cake – GF, DF. It was great the first night… but the cold weather and placing it in the refrigerator dried it out. Being that it’s already GF it’s not as moist as devils food cakes… so I’m disappointed in this round.
  4. Gluten Free Banana Pancakes, Scrambled eggs, Turkey Bacon. Exactly as that sounds.. except add the cinnamon to the pancakes and you have my Sunday morning breakfast. Some Sundays I add in chocolate chips. This Sunday I skipped the empty calories.

Modifications to Restaurants:

  1. Make sure to alert your server of your allergy.
  2. Skip the bun, opt for lettuce wraps (Or if they have a GF bun and you want the extra CHOs go for it… I don’t particularly like the taste but sometimes I opt for the bun)
  3. Don’t forget the salad dressings, sauces, and fryers! I find it hard to let go of my sweet potato fries. I KNOW they are fried in the SAME oil as those pesky onion rings, chicken tenders, etc…. But MAN do they taste SO GOOD. But for people for super sensitive tummies… or that just want to stick to our lifestyle closer DO. NOT. DO. IT.
  4. Be mindful of syrups and flavorings… While some might be GF, I have to stick to ones that are GF/DF. I love me some holiday cups at Starbucks. But lord knows I can’t do the mochas or sauces. Darn-it. Boring lattes for moi.

But HEY. You know what is gluten free without the worry for contamination? WINE! I can still have all the wines. Except… in the winter when the local wineries are closed. Look New England… we were almost on speaking terms. Then you had to go and take away weekday tastings and close doors when the snow hits. Bummer.
