Hey Heyyyyy! Women’s March Yay!!
With the smell of snow in the air thousands gathered in Columbus Circle – and around the globe – to raise our voices, and unite. Together we are a force to be seen, heard, and recognized.
While papers across the continent commented on the smaller crowds this year, the crowds still filled the streets across the country – and around the world.
Something this author didn’t quite realize was that the Women’s March has continued to impact the world around us. Even to this day communities around the globe are celebrating, uniting, and bringing a voice to whatever it is that is their reason for supporting the Women’s March.
This movement may have started because of the election of one man, but it has become and will always be more than that.
It’s about standing up for what you believe in. For requiring checks and balances of our country and the world. It’s for recognizing injustice and holding the system accountable. It’s for continuing the fight for equality at home and around the world. And it’s about fighting for our lives, our freedoms, and being the voices of those who can’t be heard.
This year was the first Women’s March I was able to participate in. And while the papers may write about the decrease in size of the crowd, the reason for the movement is apparent in our everyday lives. The need for the movement is present, so the movement will move on.
I can only hope that the momentum from these marches will carry us through. That the people I had the opportunity to walk amongst will help to heal the broken pieces of our beloved country.
After all, the crowds chanted:
“Show me what Democracy looks like!”
“THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!”
And it is/was what democracy is at the core and center of our country’s values. The freedom of speech and the rights we are marching to protect. This march sparked the fire instead me that realized I’m not alone with my hopes for a better tomorrow.
While the protesters may have some colorful signs and chants, the movement is a peaceful march geared towards ousting the hate and violence in favor of uniting the country and protecting those who’s freedoms, rights, and welfares are being challenged to this day.
Happy Marching Ladies & Gents!
